Match Reports

First XI:

The Firsts squad came into the opening game of the season full of confidence, with a good pre-season behind us full of training and match practice. Winning the toss at home was always crucial, and we elected to bat on a slow wicket that would definitely provide some demons with the new ball.

After weathering the storm of the opening pair, one wicket down, the deep batting line up of St Pauls seemed too strong for the Canterbury bowling attack. At the 40 over mark, and only 4 wickets down, it was time to accelerate. Jeremy Myers and Sam Deacon provided a show for spectators as they powered St Pauls to a fantastic total of 5/183 after the 50 overs.

As Deacon made the first 50 of the season in a patient and skilled innings with 60 and Myers powering his way to 40 runs full of big shots, frustrating the fielding side. Defending a total of 183 was always going to take the pressure off our opening bowlers with the slow wicket. Ben Skinner and Trishul Patel took full advantage of the conditions as the new ball collected 6 wickets, including a hat-trick from Ben Skinner on his way to 4 match winning wickets.

This paved the way for the rest of the St Pauls bowlers to clean up the Canterbury tail with 100 runs to spare in an extremely satisfying start to the season. We now look ahead to next week with the long journey to West Moreton Anglican College, as we are keen to continue with winning ways throughout the season

Intermediate First XI:

St Pauls had a confident start to the day after winning the toss. We sent them in to field due to conditions of the day being extremely hot. The openers Angus Garrard and Lachlan Milner went in to face off the new ball. The team could only manage a score of 79 at the end of innings, with all wickets being taken.

We were then sent in to bowl with the task of defending 80. We had good start to the match, with the score at one point being 4-11. We were cruising along but one batsmen who really picked up the Canterbury run rate caused us to drop our efforts in the field and therefore enabling them to finish off the job.

The fielding was a big improvement from our first training session with a special highlight being an extremely good catch in the deep and a direct hit from Ben Herring which was unlucky to be called not out. Although we lost the game there was still huge efforts from all the boys and some great potential for the season ahead.

Year 5 / 6:

The Year 5 & 6 players turned up bright and early for their first game of the season excited to know that they had the privilege to play on turf and the step up to a real, red Kookaburra ball. Captain for the day, Mitchell Merritt won the toss and elected to field. He took the new ball and bowled the first over with speed and accuracy. Our sharp fielding and bowling precision kept the Canterbury team at a modest score of 2/60 after 20 overs. Solid batting by Hudson 29 retired, Archie 17 retired, Oliver 22 retired, and Mitchell 21 not out ensured that we won the game easily with a score of 2/92. We used the Senior School boundaries as our boundary lines so 4s and 6s were few and far between, Oliver Rauchle was the well-deserved “Player of the Match”

The role of Cricket Supporters Group is to engage with the school for improvement of facilities for our students and also organise events to promote Cricket@St Paul’s. We would like to encourage all parents to come forth and participate / put forward ideas so we all contribute towards improving cricket @ St Paul’s.

Next CSG meeting will be held in the Library at 7pm on Wednesday 1 March.

All are welcome.
